Wet Weather Ideas for the Ekka: What To Do at the Ekka If It Rains

So, you’ve got your tickets, your family’s all set, and then – oh no! It’s raining. And now you are wondering what to do at the Ekka if it rains!?

Don’t worry!

The Ekka is packed with plenty of fun things to do that will keep your spirits up and your clothes dry. Remember, no matter how bad the weather is, the Ekka won’t stop! In fact, since the first show in 1876, it’s only been cancelled four times: due to the Spanish flu in 1919, World War II in 1942, and the COVID pandemic in 2020 and 2021.

So, come rain or shine, the Ekka is here to stay – and what are the chances it will rain non-stop all day and night anyway? You might as well get the most out of your non-refundable tickets!

The Ekka answers your questions

I contacted the Ekka directly after fielding questions from you guys about the rain. Here are their responses:

1) Will the fireworks still happen if it’s raining?

If there is rain the Ekka will operate as normal. Only a severe electrical storm or extreme wind conditions would see us modify the EkkaNITES show.

2) Will rides still operate if it rains?

If there is rain the Ekka rides will operate as normal. Only a severe electrical storm or extreme wind conditions would see us modify operations in the ride precincts.

3) Can people swap their tickets for another day?

Please direct ticket enquiries to Ekka Guest Services on enquiries@ekka.com.au and they will assist.

4) Can people swap their ride or food passes to 2025?

Please direct ticket enquiries to Ekka Guest Services on enquiries@ekka.com.au and they will assist.

5)  Can people get a refund on entry or food or ride tickets?

Please direct ticket enquiries to Ekka Guest Services on enquiries@ekka.com.au and they will assist.

So, with that said, here’s our guide to making the most out of a rainy day at Brisbane’s favourite show.

Special options for this year are also available indoors.

Watch the Bush Poetry Performances in the Sushi Hub, where Queensland’s best speakers will captivate you with their rhythm and passion as they recite their favourite bush ballads.

Don’t miss the Channel 7 Pavilion and Meet & Greets. This is the perfect chance to get a photo at the 7 News Queensland desk or the Sunrise couch. You can also play their AFL game or snap a pic with the Creek to Coast set, all while enjoying plenty of giveaways!

Cradle-a-Chick is kids-heaven in the animal pavilion! They can hold tiny chicks in the palm of their hand and watch them hatch from their shells in a special incubator.

Stay dry and enjoy free & cheap food

Undercover rides and games

While some Ekka rides might be best enjoyed on a dry day, there are always a few that operate rain or shine. Here are some of the undercover rides you should still be able to enjoy:

1. Retro Dodgems

Rock and Roll-themed dodgems cars with the music of the 1950s. This gets pretty bright and lively once the Ekka gates are open!

2. Spook Castle

Ride the largest ghost train in the Southern Hemisphere! Three stories high with actors, monsters, and effects including 10m high flames! You’ll find this ride on Gregory Terrace.

3. Crazy Cars Dodgems

Put the pedal to the metal and drift in these thrilling dodgem cars!

4. Hollywood Horrors

Enter if you DARE! Hollywood Horrors is a spine-tingling journey, which will have you screaming for more as you turn each corner.

5. Pirates Nest

Ahoy mateys! Climb aboard the Pirate’s Nest for an interactive journey, guaranteed to be fun for the whole family. This four-storey fun house is packed full of family fun, including obstacles and an interactive water zone!

6. Pirates Revenge

Australia’s largest award-winning and only travelling water roller coaster for the whole family! If you are going to get wet – why not do it properly! They do sell ponchos too!

7. Rock & Roll

Rock out as you go forwards, backwards, and extremely fast around the Rock & Roll!

8. Enchanted Circus

Roll up to an interactive funhouse featuring three levels of thrills. Kids will perform a balancing act as they cross the vibrating floor and hang on tighter than a trapeze artist as they attempt the rope bridges. Like any circus, the Enchanted Circus in Kids Carnival is a world full of colourful lights and sounds children will love.

Families tip: The Ferris Wheels are also closed in so you might still be able to enjoy great views of the area. And provided the rides are operating, a raincoat should be enough so you can still have a great time.

Dress warm and stay comfortable

August is still a little chilly, especially if it’s raining. So, make sure you wear (or bring) warm clothes, wear your waterproof shoes, or bring a spare pair of socks. Layering is key – you can always take off your jacket if you get too warm inside the pavilions. Check out the locker options in our full Ekka round-up here.

The point is, don’t let the wet deter you from spending an awesome day at the Ekka! Put on your raincoat, grab an umbrella, and get set for wet weather fun of the Ekka!
