How do some Brisbane families celebrate Easter Sunday and what Easter Sunday traditions do they have?
History of Easter
Easter is the celebration of Jesus Christ’s rising from the dead (His Resurrection) after His crucifixion which took place on what we now term Good Friday.
Easter is usually celebrated on the first Sunday after the full moon following the Vernal or Spring Equinox on March 21st. This can be any Sunday between March 22nd and April 25th. It is considered the most sacred of all the Christian holidays or celebrations.
Christ’s return (or rising) from death is called the Resurrection. According to the scriptures, Christ’s tomb was empty three days after His death, which is commemorated on Good Friday. His followers saw Him and talked to Him after this. Christians therefore believe that they have the hope of a new life (an everlasting life in Heaven) after their earthly death.
Easter traditions in Brisbane
Of course there are religious events and traditions to which many families subscribe. However, we also found when it comes to the Easter Bunny’s arrival, Brisbane families have lots of different ways to welcome her to their home. We compiled a collection of Brisbane families contributions celebrating their Easter Sunday traditions and have them here for your enjoyment.
‘Pre Easter Sunday’ Easter Bunny preparations:
Lots of Brisbane families set out flour or talcum powder on the floor or in a tray to see if the bunny leaves a trail…
Nade’s children requested that they ‘put out the carrot & tray of flour! So it ended up being a late night! We leave the tray of flour to see the EB footprints the next morning.’
Nic’s family went as far as setting an elaborate trap and said ‘We set a trap with carrots underneath. The carrot would set off a bell. And hopefully the bunny would end up in the streamers. But he got away again.
Lots of Brisbane families leave food for the Easter Bunny!
Sandi’s family build a bunny nest and leave treats for the bunny, Kellie’s family leaves carrots and lettuce and Kayley’s family also leave carrots and lettuce.
But… what food to leave out for the Easter Bunny?
There are a few schools of thought on this:
Kristy says ‘Carrot and a glass of milk’.
Renae says ‘Carrot and water’.
Leanne had to get creative ‘We left tomato because we had no carrot’.
Jamie was under strict instructions ‘I was also told I have to go to bed early because he won’t come if anyone’s awake’.
Easter Sunday morning
Nicole’s family had hard the evidence that the Easter Bunny showed up and added ‘the Easter bunny came to our house leaving bunny dust everywhere! Son left him a carrot, chocolate egg, milk and water. Son said he would be hungry and thirsty after giving eggs to everyone! He ate everything and left chocolate and pj’s and some toys! Lucky kids!’
Michelle’s family also has hard evidence that they had a visitor:
Kimberley’s family had some unique evidence that the Easter Bunny had been to their house: ‘We used jelly beans for rabbit poo this year. The kids thought it was hilarious while eating the poo!! No carrots for Easter bunny though...’
What does the Easter Bunny bring on Easter Sunday?
Jo says ‘some books as well as leaves eggs in the yard.’
Pamela says ‘Ours normally does (bring books) but this year brought t-shirts’.
Nicole’s said ‘They got Easter baskets with clothes and pjs’.
Bel makes sure the dog isn’t forgotten either ‘The Easter bunny leaves eggs but to find the eggs the Easter bunny leaves clues for them to find them. Kids love it. Easter bunny leaves a yummy bone for there puppy so he doesn’t eat him’.
But some families have reasons for not subscribing to the Easter Bunny’s visit:
Wendy says ‘no, I have a daughter with Aspergers who has anxiety and the thought of the Easter bunny coming into our house scares the life out of her!!!’
Toni agrees ‘It’s the same in our house‘.
Easter Sunday traditions are about family!
Shannon’s says ‘I guess it’s one of those things where if it’s a tradition in your family, its passed on.’
Jillien’s family is all about tradition ‘Yep we do – have been for 19 years and our parents did it to our kids. Even the oldest think it’s great. Our youngest is 9 and still believes … just … but I’ll probably keep doing it. We do it for Santa too’.
