Curriculum and Extracurricular activities offered:

Ascot State School’s curriculum is built around English, Mathematics, History, Geography, Studies of Society and Environment, Science, Technology, The Arts, Health and Physical Education and Language Other Than English (Japanese). Japanese is taught to students from Years 3-6, and cross-cultural awareness is developed across the whole school through a sister-school relationship with Miyoshi District High School.

The school has an extensive Music Program with three Concert Bands (Senior, Intermediate and Junior), String Ensembles and Senior and Junior Choirs. Events are held each year to showcase these groups and the talents of individual students. Ascot State School also offers extra-curricular activities in art, performing arts and French.

The Physical Education program has strong athletics and swimming components and an active parent-run Swimming Club.  Students can take part in netball, soccer, Auskick, softball, tennis and cricket. The school also offers fencing, martial arts, Tae Kwan Do, and self defence classes, as well as motor skills development. In Years 5 and 6, students can take part in district gala days, and also try out for district selection in a number of sports.

Facilities at Ascot State School:

Ascot State School has seven classroom blocks, library and information technology centre, activities hall,and an outdoor covered amphitheatre. There’s a dedicated art room, music rooms, computer lab and a resource room.

The school also has a 25m heated swimming pool, oval and adventure playgrounds.

Other information:

Students from Years 4-6 attend camps each year, with the length of camps increasing with each year level. The camps are important for promoting the physical, social and emotional well-being of students.

Year 4 students visit Underwater World at Mooloolaba, Year 5 students go to the Ewan Maddock Dam Recreation Centre at Landsborough, and Year 6 students attend the Tallebudgera Beach Camp.

Janine Mergler

Janine Mergler is a veteran Queensland teacher, graduating from QUT with a BEd majoring in Social Sciences. After many years in the classroom, Janine moved on to academia. She has proudly trained new generations of teachers in her role as a lecturer at Queensland University of Technology Faculty of Education. She has also worked in the Queensland Government as an education specialist, developing education resources and delivering community awareness programs to help families conserve water.
