Budd’s Beach is a Hidden Gem on the Gold Coast For Kids

Budd’s Beach Reserve – Surfers Paradise

A hidden gem just minutes from the heart of Surfers Paradise, Budd’s Beach is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the glitter strip. Pack your swimmers, a picnic lunch and you can spend the day riverside watching boaties and swimming in safe water.

Why is Budd’s Beach a good spot for families?

Firstly it’s tucked away from busy beaches and secondly it’s located on a sheltered inland sandy retreat along the Nerang River. There’s lot of established trees which provide great shade and there’s plenty of foreshore for little ones to play on.

It is tidal so this is something to be aware of when deciding where to perch for the day, and don’t forget those all important sand toys.

Kids will love the little jetty where they can drop a line in or watch other people try and catch some fish. Sure the pickings might be slim, but they’ll have fun trying!

What else is there for families to do?

Well there’s a playground with one of those cool old-school merry-go-rounds, a slide and plenty of trees for kids to climb. Little children or those afraid of big waves will love the gentle waves that come every time a boat heads out to sea past Budd’s Beach.

If you’ve got a paddle board you can venture out and about but just be warned that it’s quite a busy area for boaties, with most ignoring the six knot rule so it’s probably best for those with a little bit of experience.

Bring your binoculars if you’re inclined and you’ll get a bird’s-eye view of some incredible waterfront properties that are dotted along the Nerang River.

Does Budd’s Beach have important amenities?

One of the reasons this river beach is so great is that it has a shower block, a drinking fountain and toilets. Also included in the amenities block is a water tap to wash feet, clothes or fill up water bottles.

There are also lots of picnic tables dotted about, some under the trees and some close to the playground. These are popular during peak times so get in early if you’re thinking of having a party or gathering there.

What is Bumbles Cafe?

It is a fabulous cafe just across the road from Budd’s Beach and it makes delicious coffee and breakfast as well as refreshing drinks and takeaway food.  The river views are stunning and after a long day you’ll appreciate its air-conditioned seating area.

What is parking like?

To honest it can be hectic during weekends and holidays because at the Birt Avenue end of the park is a boat ramp that is popular with locals and those in the know. Vehicles are often left there for hours, so try one of the nearby side streets and take a short walk instead.

Where is it located?

If you’re heading north through Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast Highway take a left down Cypress Avenue and it turns into River Drive. If you miss that turn-off take one of the next three on the left-hand side.
