Fishing Gold Coast – Best Spots to Take the Kids to Drop a Line in

For many families, there’s no better experience than engaging in fishing. The peace, the experience of being ‘in’ with nature and the opportunity for quiet reflection during family time are great reasons to drop a line in. However, it can be tricky to find a child-friendly spot. You don’t want to be competing with other fishers (particularly older ones!) just so your small child can drop their reel in. You don’t want something too far away or isolated and you want to make sure it’s going to be an enjoyable day for all members of the family.

With that in mind, here are our recommendations for child-friendly…

Fishing Gold Coast spots that are great for kids!

Coomera River, Gold Coast

There’s a platform underneath the M1 crossing of the Coomera River that’s a great spot to drop a line in. Bream and cod are on the menu here and we’d recommend visiting either very early or quite late in the day.

Cudgen Creek, Kingscliff

One of our favourite spots on the coast – Cudgen Creek is a picturesque, calm area that is great for kids. Stand safely on the rocks and on the beach near the mouth of the river to drop a line in while smaller family members can splash in the shallows and peep in the rock pools.

Pine Lake, Elanora

Pine Lake is a peaceful spot with a great outlook over some very fancy houses! This isn’t a hot spot in terms of fishing but it’s a great starting point to get kids used to the idea.

Paradise Point Foreshore

There’s a fishing platform here under the Sovereign Island bridge that’s a great spot for kids to go fishing, Gold Coast! The great thing about this spot is that there are some very nearby public toilets so it’s a little more family-friendly than a few other more isolated spots.

Broadwater Jetty, Broadwater

There are a couple of great spots here near the Old Grand Hotel. This is one of our favourite Gold Coast fishing spots because there are a lot of other great things to do around here as well!

Tallebudgera Creek

Snorkelling and fishing abound at Talley! Check out our review of Tallebudgera Creek with kids here – it could be your next fave spot! There’s great visibility, a cool array of fish and lovely calm waters that will be great for little ones.

Things to remember when fishing Gold Coast spots with kids!

  • Kids have short attention spans – make sure your expectations are realistic!
  • The younger the child, the simpler their equipment should probably be.
  • Safety first! Sharp hooks, children near water and sun. Be cautious and pro-active.
