✈️ What to Expect at Gold Coast Airport (OOL) – A Parent’s Guide

When you’re traveling with kids, the airport experience can set the tone for your trip. I’ve been through Gold Coast Airport a number of times, and what I really appreciate is how compact and easy it is. You don’t need to trek for miles with prams and bags everything is close by, well signed, and family friendly.

🛂 Arriving at Gold Coast Airport – Customs & Immigration

After you land at Gold Coast Airport, the first step is clearing customs and immigration and honestly, it’s not as intimidating as it sounds.

If you’re travelling on a New Zealand passport, you can usually head straight to the SmartGates on arrival. For most other travellers including those from the USA, UK, and Europe – you’ll need to arrange an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) or visitor visa before you fly. Once that’s sorted, eligible passports can still use the SmartGates: just scan your passport, look into the camera, and you’re through in minutes. With kids along, that’s a real game-changer – no long queues while everyone gets restless.

For families, there are also special counters with friendly staff who are patient and understanding. I often let my kids hand over their own passports – they love the sense of responsibility, and it turns the process into a little adventure rather than a chore.

One thing to always remember: Australia has very strict biosecurity rules. If you’re not 100% sure what’s in your bag, just declare it. It’s not about catching you out – declaring simply shows you’re doing the right thing. The staff will check and guide you, and it’s usually over quickly. Trust me, it’s far better than risking a fine or a long delay.

📸 Note: I haven’t included any photos of the customs or immigration area here photography is restricted, and out of respect for staff and passengers, I kept my camera away. But honestly, you’re not missing much — the process is straightforward, and with SmartGates and family counters, you’ll be through quickly.

🚖 Leaving the Airport – Transport Options

The airport bus stop just outside arrivals connects you with the Gold Coast and beyond

Once you step outside after arrivals, you’ve got three clear options for getting into the city: Bus & Taxi, Uber, or Car Rental.

🚌 Buses & Taxis

Clear signage outside points you straight to buses and taxis.

The signs are big and easy to follow – buses run frequently to the Gold Coast strip and beyond, and taxis are lined up right outside. If you’re travelling light, the bus is a great budget option.

Bus 777 links the airport to Broadbeach South tram station (from there you can jump on the G:link tram into Surfers Paradise or Southport).

Bus 760 runs between Varsity Lakes Train Station and the airport.

💳 Can I pay by card on the 777 and 760 buses?

Yes. Both buses accept contactless payment. You can tap on and off with a debit or credit card, or use your phone/watch via Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay.

🚗 Uber

Dedicated Uber pickup zones are right outside the terminal.

If you prefer ride share, the Uber pickup point is clearly marked (Zone A and Zone B). I’ve used it myself, and it’s easy – just follow the painted Uber lanes on the road.

🚙 Car Rentals at Gold Coast Airport

If you’ve pre-booked a car (or even if you haven’t), the process is very simple.

First, head into the departures terminal area, where you’ll find all the major rental counters Enterprise, Europcar, Sixt, Avis, Budget, Alamo, Hertz, and more. The staff are generally super friendly and will talk you through everything, including insurance options. Personally, I prefer go with Europcar because they’re affordable and I always take the full insurance for peace of mind.

Car rental counters are located inside the departures terminal — all the big companies are here.

Once you’ve collected your keys, step outside again and follow the clear signage for rental cars. Each company will give you a bay number, and all you need to do is walk to the correct bay, find your car, and you’re on your way.

Some companies like Avis and Budget also operate booths outside near the car parks.

👉 My tip: Book online in advance to secure the best rates, and always take note of your bay number before you walk out – it saves you circling around the car park with luggage and kids in tow.

🔑 Returning Your Rental Car at Gold Coast Airport

Dropping off your rental car at Gold Coast Airport is just as simple as picking it up. As you drive back towards the airport, you’ll see clear signs for “Rental Car Return”. Just follow those and head straight to your rental company’s designated bay area.

Once you park in your allocated bay, it’s as easy as:

  1. Take all your luggage out of the car.
  2. Return the keys at your company’s counter inside.

If you’re returning the car after hours, don’t worry – every rental company has a secure drop box. Just place your keys in the slot and you’re done.

💡 Tip: Make sure you refuel your car before returning it. If you don’t, most rental companies will fill it up for you – but at a much higher rate (around $6 per litre). A quick stop at a servo near the airport can save you a hefty extra charge.

👉 My advice: Allow yourself an extra 30 minutes to refuel and return the car calmly, especially during school holidays when the airport gets busy.

✈️ Departures – Checking In at Gold Coast Airport

When you enter the departures terminal, you’ll see clear signage pointing you towards all airlines and gates. Everything is well marked and easy to follow, even if it’s your first time here.

Signage makes it simple to find Departures, Domestic Arrivals, and International Arrivals.

Most airlines – including Qantas, Jetstar, Virgin, and Air New Zealand — have their check-in counters and self-service kiosks in the same hall.

👉 My advice: Always check in online before you get to the airport. That way, you can skip most of the queues and head straight to the bag drop counters. It saves a lot of time (and stress), especially if you’re travelling with kids.

🛡 Security Clearance – What to Expect

Once you’ve checked in and dropped your bags, the next step is security screening.

For domestic flights, it’s straightforward: you’ll pass through once. Staff are generally friendly and efficient, and signage makes it clear where to go.

For international flights, you’ll go through two stages of security clearance:

Clear signage directs you to International Departures and gates 15–40.
  1. First screening – baggage and personal checks.
  2. Second screening – passport control and additional checks before you enter the international departure lounge.

📸 Note: Photography isn’t allowed in the security area, so no images here — but don’t worry, everything is clearly signposted.

👉 My tip: The first clearance point has very clear signage, so just follow the arrows. If you’re travelling with kids, let them know ahead of time that they’ll need to take off jackets, put tablets or toys through the scanner, and walk through the metal detector. It makes things smoother when they know what’s coming.
