The Email That Changed How We Pack Lunches
Last week, we received an email from my daughterโs teacher saying there was mould inside her school bag.
At first, I honestly didnโt understand how that could even happen. We clean her bag regularly, and sheโs not the kind of kid who leaves food lying around.
When we got the bag home and checked properly right down into the seams and corners we found the problem. It wasnโt a big spill or a dramatic accident. It was a small leak from her lunch box. A bit of yoghurt one day, some watermelon juice another. Nothing obvious.
Because sheโs five, she didnโt really notice. She just put her jumper on top and went about her day. Over time, that moisture built up and thatโs where the mould came from.
That was the moment we stopped trusting โleak-proofโ labels.
We realised lunch boxes donโt fail all at once they fail quietly, in backpacks, over weeks. So we decided to actually test them the way kids really use them: thrown into bags, opened with small hands, carried around all day without much care.
The lunch boxes below are the ones that genuinely stayed dry and the reason weโre a lot more confident packing school lunches now.
The Heavy-Hitter: Our Stainless-Steel โDaily Driverโ

We originally bought this one for the back-to-school rush, but itโs basically been confiscated by the rest of the family. Iโve even caught my husband trying to sneak his work leftovers into it.
The first thing you notice is the weight. This isnโt a flimsy plastic lunch box. It feels solid like it could survive being dropped down a flight of concrete stairs (and honestly, it probably could). The best part for me? Opening it on a Monday morning and not smelling a faint reminder of last Fridayโs tuna sandwich. Stainless steel just doesnโt hold onto smells the way plastic does.

What actually fits (the โmorning rushโ reality)
I was worried the compartments would be those shallow, looks-good-on-the-box ones, but they genuinely hold a decent amount of food.
- The top layer: Thereโs a flat shelf with a proper dock for the sealed stainless soup or dip cup, plus space for the matching spoon. I usually fit a sandwich or wrap alongside it, with room left for biscuit packs or small snacks. Itโs ideal when you want a few items kept completely separate, without stacking everything on top of each other.
- The bottom tray: Underneath, the removable 304 stainless-steel tray is divided into four compartments. Cut fruit stays away from crackers, mains donโt slide into snacks, and nothing gets mixed together by the time itโs opened. The tray lifts straight out for cleaning and doesnโt have any fiddly corners where food gets stuck.
The real-world catch
Iโll be honest: if your child is on the smaller side, this box is a bit of a workout. Itโs heavy when empty, and once you add a full drink bottle to their bag, it can feel like a lot for little shoulders.
The clips are also very secure. Great for preventing leaks, but my five-year-old had a small meltdown on day one because she couldnโt get it open. Sheโs figured it out now (it just takes a firm thumb push), but Iโd recommend a few practice runs at the kitchen bench before school.
The verdict
If youโre tired of buying multiple cheap plastic lunch boxes every year because the hinges snap or they start smelling a bit funky, this oneโs worth the investment. Itโs the only lunch box we use that I donโt feel the need to โcheck onโ during the day and that peace of mind alone makes it a winner in our house.

Another Favourite We Tried: The Purple 5-Compartment Bento Box

After a week with the teal stainless-steel bento, we decided to test a lighter plastic option too – mainly for the younger one who likes something colourful and a bit easier to carry.
This bright purple lunch box turned out to be just as practical in its own way.
Safe and Sturdy for Everyday School Runs
Made from BPA-free, food-safe PP plastic, it feels solid enough to survive the rough-and-tumble of a school bag yet light enough for little shoulders.
I also liked that thereโs no odd plastic smell even on the first wash.
Smart Layout for a Balanced Lunch

Inside, the five compartments make it easy to pack a proper lunch: a sandwich or wrap in the big slot, fruit and veggie sticks in the smaller ones, and a removable little sauce cup in the centre for dips or dressings.
Thereโs even a slim slot in the lid that holds a matching fork and spoon – a tiny detail thatโs been surprisingly handy on picnic days.
Leak-Proof and Secure

The four locking clips are simple enough for little fingers to open but hold the lid firmly shut in the backpack.
We packed yoghurt in the small cup one day and it stayed put all the way to school – no sticky surprises at lunchtime.
Right Size for the Younger Kids

At about 1300 ml capacity, itโs roomy enough for a balanced lunch but not bulky or heavy. It slips easily into the standard school cooler bag.
Easy to Heat and Clean
This purple box is microwave-safe (lid off) for quick warm-ups, freezer-safe for make-ahead snacks, and goes straight into the dishwasher at the end of the day. That alone makes my life a lot easier on busy weekday nights.

Our Third Pick: The Bunny-Print – Bento with Matching Lunch Bag

By the time we tested this one, the kids were already excited – mostly because of the storybook bunny print on the lid.
This set quickly became the favourite for school excursions and chilly mornings because it comes with everything in one bundle: the lunch box, a soup cup, utensils, and its own insulated bag.
Fun Design Thatโs Practical Too
The lunch box is available in a few playful prints, but we picked the green floral bunny design. The colours stay bright even after a few washes (food-safe UV printing means it wonโt fade), and the kids love spotting โtheir bunny lunchโ in the classroom lunch trolley.
Smart 4-Compartment Layout

Inside the box, thereโs a 4-section divider system with deeper compartments than standard lunch boxes, which means no more squashed sandwiches. The silicone sealing rings around each section lock in liquids really well – weโve had no strawberry juice leaking into the sandwiches so far.
The Stainless-Steel Soup Cup is a Winner

This set includes a 300 ml double-walled stainless-steel soup cup that keeps broth or warm pasta sauce cosy for at least two hours – a big hit on cooler mornings. It also comes with matching BPA-free fork and spoon, which tuck neatly into their own slots, so thereโs no hunting around for utensils at the bottom of the school bag.
Comes with Its Own Insulated Bag

One of my favourite things about this set is the coordinating insulated lunch bag. Itโs roomy enough (around 5 L capacity) to fit the bento box, snacks, and a water bottle. The bag is made from water-resistant Oxford fabric with an easy-wipe lining and has a detachable strap that converts it from a hand-carry to a cross-body – perfect for day trips.
