Families Magazine is proud to share this exclusive story from Anglicare Southern Queensland, highlighting the many faces of fatherhood this Father’s Day.
More than biology
This Father’s Day isn’t only about celebrating biological dads — it’s also a chance to say thank you to foster dads, kinship carers, stepdads, grandfathers, mentors and other father figures who step in when they are needed most. One of those is Brisbane local Steve, who, alongside his partner Carly, became a Kinship Carer for Carly’s niece.
Steve & Carly’s story
When child services approached the couple about caring for Carly’s newborn niece, they didn’t hesitate. They wanted nothing more than to raise her surrounded by family.
Quote (Steve)
“The best thing I find about being a carer is the joy that our little one brings and the love she brings out of me.” — Steve
“Although there are challenges that come with this sort of role, my partner Carly and I have received great training, advice and support through Anglicare, which really helps.” — Steve
Quotes (Carly)
“Steve has a very special relationship with our little one and it’s been such an incredible experience to witness.” — Carly
“Before becoming Kinship Carers, we hadn’t planned on having a family of our own. Seeing him step into that father figure role — and the love and adoration he has for our little girl — is something I’ll cherish forever.” — Carly
“It’s been life-changing embarking on this unexpected journey with Steve, who is a constant pillar of strength for us and my family every single day.” — Carly
What kinship care means
Kinship care provides a safe and nurturing home for children who can’t live with their parents, prioritising caregivers the child already knows and trusts — often relatives. This helps reduce the emotional impact of separation while keeping children connected to their roots and relationships.
Message from Anglicare
“Fatherhood is about showing up, and that looks different for every family. We honour and celebrate all those who embrace that role and lead with love every step of the way.” — Tammy Lloyd, Chief Operating Officer of Children, Youth and Families, Anglicare Southern Queensland
Bridge to Brisbane
Right now, Anglicare is taking part in the Bridge to Brisbane to raise funds that help carers with cost-of-living pressures, training, and short holiday breaks for families.
