About Brisbane State High School

Brisbane State High School opened in July 1921 and has grown to become a well-appointed school catering for over 3,330 students in years 7-12. The Brisbane State High School motto is Scientia est Potestas – Knowledge is Power. The school has a high academic reputation and counts successful business, entertainment, and sporting persons amongst its alumni, including many Olympic medal winners and leading civil servants.

There is a small museum on site dedicated to school memorabilia, which displays past uniforms, photographs and magazines from the school’s inception and through the years.

Brisbane State High School facilities

The school has a canteen, uniform shop and library. The Performing Arts Centre has tiered seating, rehearsal spaces and adjacent car parking.  Brisbane State High School’s Indoor Sports Complex has multiple full-sized courts catering to basketball, netball and badminton and also has tiered seating and a canteen for refreshments.

For outdoor sports the school maintains playing fields, changing rooms and a canteen off-site at Carina. These are used primarily for cricket, rugby and football. The school also has rowing sheds on the West End Reach of the Brisbane River. 

Sports at Brisbane State High School

Sports are an important part of the curriculum at Brisbane State High. The school is a member of several sporting associations, including Brisbane Schoolgirls’ Rowing Association, and holds interhouse competitions in swimming, cross country and athletics. Brisbane State High School rugby, cricket and football fields are at Fursden Road, Carina. 

Many non-standard sports are offered with additional costs as applicable. Students can participate in Fencing, Water Polo and Gymnastics, with Chess and Debating included for those who prefer.

Extra-Curricular activities at Brisbane State High

Students are strongly encouraged to take part in extra-curricular activities in the areas of culture, sport, academia and personal development through volunteering and leadership. The school also has its own student-led magazine “The Ink Drop”, produced by students, for students.

Brisbane State High School offers language studies in German, French, Italian, Greek (Year 12 only), Japanese, Chinese and Spanish. Year 11 and 12 students can undertake Accounting, Business Communication and Technology and Business Organisation and Management.

Extra-curricular activities include badminton, dance troupes, drama club, cross country, debating, gymnastics, fencing, rowing, hockey, film club, rugby, netball, musical production, football, swimming, softball, theatre, tennis, triathlon, track & field, volleyball, lego and digital/technology activities.

The school supports participation in the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Enrolling at BSHS

Brisbane State High is Queensland’s largest secondary school and is under an enrolment management plan. First priority for enrolments is to students who can demonstrate they live within the defined catchment boundary (see above). For children living outside the catchment, the school offers selected entry for students demonstrating merit in academics, culture or sport.

Brisbane State High School fees

Brisbane State High School scholarships

As a state school, BSHS doesn’t offer financial scholarships, however it does have certain scholarships in place for extra-curricular activities, notably the Goethe Scholarship. The Goethe Scholarship is awarded to a student showing excellence in German and and provides the opportunity for the student to travel to Germany to stay and study with a host family.

Uniform

The Brisbane State High School uniform is to be worn with pride.

Girls’ uniform

For girls the uniform consists of a white blouse and tie over navy blue skirt, shorts or trousers with white socks and black formal school shoes. There is a choice of two hats for girls. The jumper is navy blue and a formal blazer, navy with thin red stripes, is required by senior students (years 10, 11 & 12) for winter months.

Boys’ uniform

The boys’ uniform consists of a choice of blue short sleeved shirt (no tie) or white long-sleeved shirt (worn with tie) over grey shorts or trousers, grey socks and black formal shoes. The jumper is grey and the blazer is as above.

There is a unisex sports uniform and additional sport-specific uniforms.
