Oxley State School’s mission is to ensure that every child improves every day. The school motto, ‘Success Through Effort’ reinforces the school’s belief that with the right teaching at the right time, every student has the ability to learn.

The school incorporates the ‘You Can Do It’ program to help develop students’ confidence, persistence, organisation and resilience, as well as teach them how to get along.

Computer literacy is highly valued, and digital learning is embedded into the curriculum. The school also has three cross-curriculum priorities: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures, Asia and Australia’s engagement with Asia, and Sustainability.

Curriculum and Extracurricular activities offered:

Oxley State School’s curriculum follows the DETE P-12 curriculum for delivering the Australian Curriculum.  Key learning areas are English, Mathematics, Science, the Humanities, the Arts, Technology, Health and Physical Education and Languages Other Than English (LOTE). Years 5-6 students learn Chinese Mandarin as their LOTE subject.

The school has a strong extra-curricular music program. Students in Years 5 and 6 can take tuition in brass, woodwind and percussion instruments, and join the school band when proficient. Students can also learn to play a range of percussion instruments with percussion group Mud Company.

There’s a Junior Choir for Prep to Year 3 students, and a Senior Choir for Years 4 – 6. All students are eligible to join.

Students in Years 5 and 6 take part in Interschool sport competitions. There’s also a Skipping Club aimed at fun and fitness, and helping students learn to skip at a highly proficient level.  Swimming is also available and students can join the Amateur Swimming Club (The Oxley Otters).

Oxley State School has a leadership program in which Year 6 students can be elected as school, house or music captains.  There is also a Friendship Club providing lunchtime activities for students in the Resource Centre.

Facilities at Oxley State School:

Oxley State School has a Prep building, Resource Centre and Multi-purpose Hall. Most classrooms are air-conditioned and have interactive whiteboards. Students have access to computers and there is wireless access to allow for flexible learning.

Other info about Oxley State School:

Oxley State School offers Gifted and Talented Identification and Support for students with very high levels of ability.

There is also a Special Needs Program and Learning Support for students with physical, intellectual, social disability and other specific learning needs.

A specialist teacher is also available for those students for whom English is an additional language.

Janine Mergler is a veteran Queensland teacher, graduating from QUT with a BEd majoring in Social Sciences. After many years in the classroom, Janine moved on to academia. She has proudly trained new generations of teachers in her role as a lecturer at Queensland University of Technology Faculty of Education. She has also worked in the Queensland Government as an education specialist, developing education resources and delivering community awareness programs to help families conserve water.
