Rocksports Birthday Parties Review

When Master (nearly) 7 was planning for his 7th birthday party, he had a simple criteria. He wanted something fun and something that was interesting not ‘boring that I have done before’. My criteria was a little bit more detailed: the party needed to be easy, all weather, not too far away and I wanted to be in charge of the food choices.

We chose Rocksports at Fortitude Valley because it ticked all our boxes. Right from the first phone call to Chris, the owner, everything was easy. We secured the date and the time we needed. They posted out the ‘waiver of liability’ (children need them signed by their adults) to us so we had them completed before we arrived on the day (to save time) and I arranged the invitations to ten of Master (nearly) 7’s friends.

Rock climbing at Rocksports:

Climbers need to be over 3 years old and you need to have about 1 belayer (person who holds the ropes at the bottom) to every 2 or 3 kids. Belayers have to be over 13 years old. You are given full training by an expert, who helps you get your harness on (everyone gets the correct sizes) and a practice climb to ensure you know what you are doing. In our case, the birthday boy did the practice climb to show everyone how it works! Once everyone is confident that they know what they are doing, you get about 2 1/2 hours of climbing fun.

  • Children climbing at the party – $18
  • Belayers (non-climbing) – FREE
  • Additional climbing adults as part of the party – $18.

I was pleased to hear that Rocksports DO NOT cater for parties. Personally I think this is awesome, as it means no cold chips and chicken nuggets and plates of sugary sweets! You can order from the pizza shop that is local if you want to do that or, like us, you can bring in your own food. All Rocksports parties are booked into the dedicated mezzanine floor that overlooks the rock climbing. (You can see it well in our video review below).

You will get allocated the number of tables and chairs you need and your guests can come and go throughout the party when they need  a break from climbing or belaying. I catered the party by using a company called Wholesomeness who only provide organic, high quality food. I gave them a list of allergies/intolerances related to our guests and they prepared a ‘party pack’ that ticked all the boxes AND it was yummy! We also provided water bottles for each child to keep them hydrated.

  1. Thanks for sharing this review of Rocksports! It looks like a really fun venue. I didn’t even realize they have a party room too! I’m definitely keeping this idea in mind for my niece’s 7th birthday next year.

  2. I’d never considered having a birthday party here – but what a great idea… not sure if the hubby will want to climb more than Master 5 though???
