What is a Montessori School?

A Montessori School is one that has a child-centred educational approach based on the studies of Dr Maria Montessori. It is a philosophy that has been followed by schools around the world for well over 100 years.

This is a concept that considers that childhood is one of natural curiosity. Children are eager to learn and are capable of following their own learning journey in a carefully cultivated environment. A Montessori school looks to develop the child physically, socially, emotionally and cognitively (academically, thought-centred).

There are a range of interpretations of the philosophy but many of these elements must be in place for it to be considered a true Montessori school.

  • Mixed aged classrooms
  • The availability (and encouragement) of student choice
  • Blocks of working time that are structured to have no interruptions (usually three hours)
  • A discovery-based (let’s find out) rather than a teacher-led (you must do this) approach
  • The use of natural materials instead of plastic or man-made
  • Classrooms and learning spaces structured with the child in mind (objects within reach)
  • Free movement around the room
  • A trained Montessori teacher who will observe the child as an individual and remark on talents, abilities, characteristics and tendencies

Why choose a Montessori school?

Many parents are finding themselves looking for alternatives to mainstream education, particularly as prep ages become younger and standardised testing becomes more prominent. They are looking for more of a focus on the child as an individual learner so that their unique individuality may be encouraged.
