Hillbrook’s balanced approach fosters creativity

At Hillbrook, the school aims to inspire students to become curious, engaged and interested in the world around them. Here’s how.

School of thought

Hillbrook’s Philosophical Inquiry (PI) program is embedded into the curriculum and sees students spend time each week considering the big issues fundamental to the way we live our lives. Students brainstorm, debate, and ask open-ended questions and along the way develop the ability to make reasoned judgements and the confidence to change their minds when faced with good reasons. By doing PI, students learn to think. Not what to think, but how to think.

Hillbrook Chalk Art

Mindfulness matters

As creativity, in part, relies on the brain being in a state of unfocused, restful wakefulness, Hillbrook teachers purposely schedule regular quiet periods where students can reflect, relax and enjoy some creative expression individually or as a group. This could be a chalk art session, painting in the sun, digging in the School’s vegetable gardens or an early morning bush walk.

Natural environments

Being in nature gives students the opportunity to disconnect with the busyness of daily life and be imaginative, problem-solve and engage with others. Hillbrook’s Outdoor Education program sees each Year level undertake a number of outdoor activities each semester including camping trips, kayaking, orienteering, bush walking, rock-climbing and other adventure-based activities.
