Established in 2001, Forest Lake State High School a co-educational curriculum for a large diverse group of students.  Split into junior secondary school (years 7, 8 and 9) and a senior school (years 10, 11 and 12), Forest Lake State High School offers a high quality of learning programs to meet the needs of students in today’s modern world.

The school promotes a caring environment to all members of the school’s community, based on development and learning strategies.  Student leadership is encouraged, as is parent involvement in all aspects of school life.

Student excellence programs are offered in academic, cultural and sporting programs.

Additional activities offered:

Year 7 and 8 level students participate in music as part of the curriculum, whereas years 9 to 12 choose to opt for music as an elective.  Year 12 students can choose to elect music extension and specialise in musicology, composition or performance.

Music plays a large part of the school program, with opportunities to participate in bands and concerts.

Instruments that can be studied in the school program include: woodwind – flute, oboe, clarinet, bass clarinet, saxophone (alto, tenor and baritone), Brass – French horn, trumpet, euphonium/baritone, trombone, tuba, Percussion – tuned and un-tuned percussion, Strings – violin, viola, cello, double bass.

School performances, include: – Music – fanfare, Brisbane EKKA Urban Upbeat Competition, – Music Tour or Music Camp (alternating each year, 2013 was a tour to Central Queensland), State Honours Ensemble Program.  Drama club, dance competitions, Brisbane Performing Arts Challenge, Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art, Music Extension Recitals and concerts, Film and Television Showcase Night, Senior Drama Performance Night – Dreamworld Performance, Dance Night, Music Excellence Day, Community Events, Artists in Residence (drama, dance) and Music Theatre Excursions (music, dance, drama, film and television).

In recent years, a local hip-hop musician has been working with the school to offer song writing, production and performance opportunities in the local community and further afield.

Janine Mergler is a veteran Queensland teacher, graduating from QUT with a BEd majoring in Social Sciences. After many years in the classroom, Janine moved on to academia.
