Get ready to embark on a journey of discovery with the return of World Science Festival Brisbane 2024, promising ten days of exhilarating exploration of science, art and technology.

From Friday 15 to Sunday 24 March 2024 this extraordinary event, hosted by Queensland Museum will feature a dynamic mix of free and ticketed events, family-friendly activities, talks, debates, and engaging conversations that will illuminate the wonders of science.

The program will embrace the theme of Thinkers and Dreamers as it delves into vast realms of knowledge and pushes the boundaries of our understanding to reveal the impact of science, whether it’s transforming medicine, technology, or our understanding of the natural world.

With more than 50 events and 175 sessions to choose from the festival includes two world premieres, one Australian premiere, and more than 10 events exclusive to Brisbane.

World Science Festival co-founder and renowned physicist Professor Brian Greene will return to the QPAC stage for three shows starting with Beyond the Stars on Wednesday 20 March offering a special multimedia journey across the cosmos.

The prospect of a moon landing in 2025 will be explored in Space Rocks to Moon Rocks: NASA Frontiers following NASA’s successful Osiris Rex mission which returned samples of an asteroid to earth after a seven-year mission. The samples will make their way to Australia as top scientists join Brian to discuss the revelations of Osiris Rex, the new Artemis mission, and Australia’s involvement in both.

Planet advocate and environmental provocateur, Craig Reucassel will present Dream on: The Waste and Climate War as he leads a battalion of scientists on a quest to uncover practical solutions that empower all of us in the battle against waste.

ABC’s weather expert, Nate Byrne, will set out on a journey to the beating burning heart of volcanoes to reveal how they have shaped the landscape and life on our planet in Everything You Need to Know About: Volcanoes.

Torres Strait Islander journalist and broadcaster Rhianna Patrick and a panel of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander experts will come together for a series of insightful conversations from a First Nations perspective.

Discover the wisdom, sustainability and ancestral traditions that Indigenous communities bring to global discussions on food security and the environment in Cultivating the Future of Food.

Black Summer: The Return of Country looks at how country is recovering three years on from one of the most extreme fire seasons on record, what has been learnt since this major natural disaster and what could cultural burning offer in reducing future fire threats. 

They say laughter is the best medicine so if you’re in need of a dose then Night of the Nerds is where you’ll get a belly full. Comedian Mark Humphries will lead two all-star teams of scientists, tech heads and funny people as they face off in a series of challenges to lead their team to the ultimate nerdy triumph.

ABC super nerd Tegan Taylor, News Breakfast weather presenter Nate Byrne, The Chasers’ Craig Reucassel, Astrophysicist Kirsten Banks and the house superband fronted by Patience Hodgson (The Grates), alongside Georgie Browning (Velociraptor, Babaganouj), Jen Boyce (Ball Park Music), Paul Furness (Ball Park Music) and Simi Lacroix will add a touch of razzle-dazzle to the fun and frivolity of the night.

There will be plenty of engaging, hands-on activities perfect for the entire family with City of Science back at South Bank, that will leave kids and science enthusiasts of all ages awestruck.

Enjoy conversations that delve into Mysteries from the Museum, The Deep Dark Ocean, and learn Everything you Need to Know about parasites, shipwrecks, insect superpowers, and volcanoes.

Beyond the science-fuelled fun the popular Turtle Hatchery returns to Queensland Museum where visitors will have the opportunity to view baby Loggerhead Turtles hatching from eggs that are incubated onsite and timed to emerge during the festival

The intersection of art and science will be on show in an exciting Art/Science Program featuring interactive artworks with links into visual arts, STEM, First Nations culture, science and digital technologies, designed to encourage audiences to discover the connection between culture and science.
