Adderton Fruit Salad

Discover one of Brisbane’s hidden cultural gems when Adderton: house & heart of mercy reopens to the public on Saturday 9 January 2021. One of Queensland’s oldest surviving residences, Adderton will welcome visitors for the first time since COVID-19 forced its temporary closure with an opening weekend of new exhibitions, workshops and activities on 9 and 10 January.

Young visitors can take part in free activities in the Mini Mercy children’s space. Armed with a free copy of the beautifully illustrated activity book, Fruit Salad, the adventurous tales of a Convent Cat, children can discover simple ways to make a positive difference in the world. Suitable for ages five to 10.

Whiskers Café

Kids will love pretending to create fun and fruity dishes at the kitchen in Whiskers Café and delighting their ‘guests’ with suitably scrumptious concoctions!

Create a Cup of Kindness

How can we show welcome and care to those in need?   What small acts of hospitality and kindness can we offer to people in need of comfort?  Kids consider the idea of kindness and share them through text or images on a teacup template that can then be added to the Adderton exhibition, A Cup of Mercy.

Fruity-liscious hats

Create your own colour-filled and fruity-liscious hat to wear as you continue your adventure around Adderton.  All materials and templates are provided for kids to add their own fruity flourish.

What else is on at Adderton?

Adderton Curator Linda Phillips says Adderton: house & heart of mercy is a space for the community, focused on creativity, engagement, justice, learning and reflection.

“Adderton is a truly unique cultural destination, visitors explore justice and social issues through contemporary art, historical stories, workshops and events engaging in action to help create social change,” Ms Phillips says.

#KnowledgeKeepers

#KnowledgeKeepers highlights four significant Inala Elders, their stories and connections to community and place through a remarkable possum skin map. A collaboration between artist Carol McGregor, Elders, knowledge-keepers and community members, the map captures the history of Inala and how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have shaped the area.

He | She | They | Them | Us

He | She | They | Them | Us is a collaborative work by Aha Ensemble, Daniele Constance and Phluxus2 Dance Collective that invites visitors to view others more deeply and reflect on their thoughts and ideas about other people. The video portrait series explores visibility and invisibility – particularly for people living with visible and invisible disabilities – capacity and capability, acceptance and difference.

A Cup of Mercy

Visitors of all ages are invited to see the tumbling teacups by artist Denise Faulkner and brew their unique “cup of kindness” to add to new exhibition, A Cup of Mercy.

Adderton is open 10am – 4pm Saturday and Sunday and 10am – 2pm Tuesday to Friday. The on-site licensed Good Cup Café is operated by Holy Cross Services and serves coffee, tea and light meals in a beautiful setting.

Book your free visit to Adderton in advance here. Groups of 10 or more are asked to email events@adderton.org.au or phone 3839 2494.

Small group, 45-minute guided tours are held on Wednesdays and Sundays at 10.30am.

Adderton – an initiative of the Sisters of Mercy Brisbane Congregation, is located at 547 Ann Street, within the historic All Hallows’ Convent visible from the Story Bridge.
