We know that when you have little people that need naps, you don’t always want to do a full-day trip.

You can still explore in half a day though, and there is so much to see and do from the Ferny Grove train line! The best part is, you don’t even need a car as you can just jump on the train!

We’ve put together this list of 6 epic half-day trips from the Ferny Grove train line, so grab a backpack and jump on a train to explore and enjoy a fun day out!

Caboolture Line | City Stations | Shorncliffe Line | Gold Coast | Beenleigh

Easy (Green): A nice easy walk. Expect less than 6/7 minutes from station to the destination. Usually one or two very close destinations for a nice, relaxing half day out.

Medium (Yellow): Looking for a bit more of an adventure? These stations are usually no more than 15 minutes from their fun destinations. These stations often have multiple destinations too so there is tons of fun stuff to see and do!

Hard (Red): An adventurous day out. Expect longer than 15 minute walks from the station to the destination and there may be multiple destinations. A great choice for those who want to enjoy a good walk and have an active day out!

Ferny Grove Line

1 Newmarket station – Medium

From Newmarket Station, head down Murrell Street and then down Alderson Street. Then you will reach Newmarket Olympic Pool. It shouldn’t take you longer than 10 minutes to reach it.

Newmarket Olympic Pool costs only $6.20 per adult, $4.60 per child or $18.90 for a family pass for 2 adults and 2 children. It’s open 6 days a week. The pool features a shaded toddler wading pool with fountains, water sprays and a slide. There is also pool for older children featuring a deeper pool and lots of fun water features.

The pool also features plenty of shady trees and picnic tables to sit around. There are also BBQs provided if you’d like to cook up some lunch. There is also a playground for the kids to play on after their swim. If you’re eager for hot food, the Kiosk at the pool features a range of food, as well as coffee, frozen drinks and ice-creams. What a great half day out from Ferny Grove train line!

2 Alderley station – Medium

Upon leaving Alderley Station, walk up Southpine Road until you reach Grinstead Park. The walk should only take you about 12 or so minutes.

Grinstead Park features a huge, fort like playground guaranteed to bring hours of fun. The covered playground includes swings and a flying fox, as well as slides and a fort structure to run around and play on. The park also features a skate park, bicycle pathways and a half court to play ball games on, so don’t forget to bring along your bikes, scooters or skateboards with you.

The park also has picnic facilities such as shelters and picnic areas, as well as BBQs to enjoy a nice picnic. There are plenty of trees around too, providing a lot of shade from the sun if you wish to sit on a picnic blanket on the grass.

3 Gaythorne station – Easy

Once you leave Gaythorne Station, head down Samford Road for about 5 minutes and then turn left into Imbros Street. Follow the street down and you should reach Ferguson Park after about 5 or so minutes.

Ferguson Park features a small playground for children to play on, grassy spaces to run around and a picnic area to enjoy a nice picnic. There are plenty of trees around, making it a nice and shady place to visit.

4 Mitchelton station – Easy

From Mitchelton Station, head down Osborne Road for about 5 minutes and turn left at Samford Road. Walk for another 5 minutes to the left and you should reach Mitchelton Park.

Mitchelton Park features a playground for children to play on and a basketball half court. The shaded playground features swings, slides and a climbing frame. There is also a picnic area which can be used to enjoy lovely picnic lunch.

If you feel like a bite to eat before you jump back on the Ferny Grove train line and head for home, you can head to Gaythorne RSL which is a two-minute walk away. They offer kids meals like nuggets, fish and burgers with chips for $12.

5 Keperra station – Easy

When you leave Keperra Station, follow the pathway to the right of the station and you’ll reach Dash Street Park. It should only take about 2 or 3 minutes to get there.

The park, which is right next to a dog park, features a shaded playground. The playground includes swings, bouncers and a slide. The playground is also close to picnic areas, making it a great place to enjoy a picnic, and there are BBQ points there. There is also a half basketball court and rebound wall, so the kids can bring along a ball or two to play with. There is a public toilet there too.

6 Ferny Grove station – Medium

Once you leave Ferny Grove Station, get onto Ferny Way and follow the road down for about 15 minutes. Once you get to Ferny Hills Pool, turn left and follow the path down for another 5 or so minutes. You should reach George Willmore Park.

George Willmore Park features huge grassy spaces for kids to play on, making it a great spot for ball games and frisbee throwing. There is a half size basketball court and cricket batting net. There is also an excellent children’s play area which features several smaller playgrounds. This play area includes climbing frames, slides, swings and spinners on a bark-based playground. For picnics, there are plenty of benches to sit down at as well as BBQs to use. There are also toilet facilities at the park.
