Queensland University of Technology
To enter the Queensland University of Technology and undertake their Bachelor of Education (Primary), you will need an ATAR of 71. Students must have passed four semesters (Units 3 & 4, C) at an Australian high school level or equivalent:
- English, or literature, or English and literature extension, or English as an additional language (units 3 & 4, C)
- General mathematics, mathematical methods or specialist mathematics (units 3 & 4, C)
- At least one of Agricultural Science, Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Science, Marine Science, Physics, or Psychology (Units 3 & 4, C)
- Teaching Personal Statement
- LANTITE Literacy status
- LANTITE Numeracy status
Fees vary depending on the units chosen. The average annual fee for 2023 is $4,200. The course can be completed over 4 years full-time or 8 years part-time.
From this course, students will gain a deep understanding of child and adolescent development, curriculum and pedagogy knowledges and practices, creating positive learning environments and more. They will also participate in supervised placements in multiple learning environments. A blue card is a requirement.
University of Queensland
To study the Bachelor of Education (Primary) at the University of Queensland, you must have an ATAR of 75. Students must have successfully completed:
- Queensland Year 12 (or equivalent)
- General English subject (Units 3 & 4, C)
- General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics (Units 3 & 4, C)
- one of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Agricultural Science, Marine Science, Earth and Environmental Science, or Psychology (Units 3 & 4,C)
The course will cover all aspects of the Australian Curriculum while developing vital knowledge about teaching and learning, child development, diversity and inclusion, and Indigenous education. Supervised classroom placement commences in the first year and in your final year you’ll undertake a professional experience placement.
Indicative annual fees for students in 2023 were $4,770. 2024 fees are to be announced. Graduates have the opportunity to progress to a Master of Educational Studies at UQ after successfully completing their degree. A blue card is a requirement.
Griffith University
Griffith University offers a 3.5 or 4-years full-time equivalent Bachelor of Education at its Mount Gravatt, Gold Coast, and Logan campuses. This program prepares students to teach in primary or secondary settings. Students undertake a foundation first year and then undertake studies in either primary or secondary education from Year 1/Trimester 3.
It requires an ATAR of 70. Prerequisites include:
- English, English as an Additional Language, Literature or English & Literature Extension (Units 3&4, C)
- General Mathematics or Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics (Units 3&4, C)
- Non-academic entry requirements. Primary Ed students from second year will need a General Science subject (Units 3&4, C) or equivalent

University of the Sunshine Coast
To study the Bachelor of Primary Education at the University of the Sunshine Coast, you must have an ATAR of 70. Students must have successfully completed:
- English (Units 3 and 4, C)
- General Maths, Maths Methods or Specialist Maths (Units 3 and 4, C)
- A General Science subject (Units 3 and 4, C)
An online questionnaire must also be completed along with a personal statement. A blue card is a requirement.
In the course, students will develop curriculum knowledge in English, mathematics, science, technology, arts, health and physical education, history, and geography. From their first year, they’ll complete 90 days of supervised professional experience in local schools, and rural and remote settings if desired. Annual fees for 2023 are $4,120.
The course is currently available at USC’s Sunshine Coast, Moreton Bay and Fraser Coast campuses either in person or online.
Australian Catholic University
Australian Catholic University offers a 4-year full-time equivalent Bachelor of Education (Primary) at its Banyo campus. The course includes numerous placements and have the chance to have a creative, challenging and rewarding career helping and inspiring children to develop important lifelong skills.
It requires the following prerequisites at year 12 level or equivalent:
- English (Units 3 & 4, C)
- General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics (Units 3 & 4, C)

Other options to consider
The University of Southern Queensland and the Australian Catholic University also offer Primary Education Degrees. ACU provides accreditation to teach in Catholic Schools, providing you successfully complete the Religious Education components of the course.
Extra Requirements
Bachelor of Education students must satisfactorily complete the Queensland College of Teachers’ Literacy and Numeracy assessment in order to meet the course and QCT accreditation requirements.
All students must hold a blue card as part of the working with children check. Students who do not hold a blue card will not be able to participate in placement or sessions which require contact with children and may still incur fees for this unit. It is strongly recommended that blue card applications are submitted as soon as possible, ideally straight after you have received your offer.
Didn’t get a high enough ATAR?
There are other ways to enter the education field and work your way up to studying a degree in Education. TAFE Brisbane, offers a Certificate III in Education Support which will allow you to work in a number of educational settings including public, independent, or after school care setting supporting educational leaders and their students. This can be a good way to get some hands-on experience before starting your degree.
