University of Queensland
UQ’s Bachelor of Midwifery is a 3-year full-time course delivered internally for students with an ATAR of 89.2. Students will need to have completed:
- Queensland Year 12 (or equivalent) General English subject (Units 3 & 4, C)
- either Biology, Chemistry, or Physics (Units 3 & 4, C)
The course is designed to develop graduate midwives who will direct their own learning and apply clinical reasoning skills in their midwifery practice. Students participate in supervised clinical placements and this includes 20 ‘continuity of care’ experiences where you’ll accompany a woman and her family through pregnancy, birth and the postpartum experience.
Upon graduating, you’ll be ready to work in a variety of public and private health care settings. As of 2023, the annual fees for this degree are $5,540.
Griffith University
At Griffith University, the Bachelor of Midwifery is offered at 3 years full-time or 2 years part-time + 2 years full-time at the Logan campus. You’ll need an ATAR of 88 to be eligible, as well as a passing grade in English, English as an Additional Language, Literature, or English & Literature Extension (Units 3&4, C). You’ll learn from expert midwives in a course that blends online learning with 2-week intensive blocks on campus each semester. You will also take part in extensive clinical placements and weekly clinical tutorials.
Your professional practice placements will involve following 20 women through their pregnancy, birth, and the 6-week period after birth. In 2023, annual tuition fees for this degree were $4,000
Australian Catholic University
At ACU, the Bachelor of Midwifery degree is offered for a February start only. You’ll need an ATAR of 84 to be eligible. The course prepares students for work in a variety of healthcare organisations and community settings. You’ll learn to manage pregnancy and childbirth and to provide effective care to women and their infants. You’ll also complete over 1000 hours of midwifery clinical practice. The students will also engage with a minimum of ten women to follow their pregnancy, labour, birth and postnatal care journey called their Continuity of Care Experiences
Students will need to have completed:
- Queensland Year 12 (or equivalent) General English subject (Units 3 & 4, C)

University of the Sunshine Coast
USC’s Bachelor of Midwifery is a 3-year full-time course delivered for students with an ATAR of 96.00. Students are recommended to have completed:
- English
- General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics
- At least one science subject
Students will learn how to provide woman-centred, evidence-based care to women and their families. They will engage with 10 women across the continuum of care, from antenatal visits to labour and birth, and postnatal visits. During the program, in addition to 10 continuity of care experiences, you will complete a minimum of 700 midwifery practice hours. 2023 fees are $5,686.
Didn’t get a high enough ATAR for the Bachelor of Midwifery course?
Don’t worry if your ATAR or entry rank isn’t quite where it needs to be. There are many paths you can take to get where you want to be. All of the universities mentioned above offer bridging programs or upgrading. You can even do a year of a TAFE course, such as a Diploma of Nursing, and improve your entry score that way.
Midwifery degrees are in high demand, so placing nursing on your QTAC form as a preference will get your foot in the university door if you’re only narrowly missing out on a Bachelor of Midwifery placement.
