Aussie Rules Football (AFL) is a national sport that anyone can get into and it’s not just for boys – check out the hash tag #GirlsPlayToo!

Kids in Brisbane can start as young as three years old with the Kinderkick and Auskick programs, and boys and girls can play in mixed Junior AFL teams up to 11 years old. From U12 boys and girls play in their own Youth AFL competition teams, with many clubs now focussing on developing their girls-only teams as the sport grows in popularity amongst girls.

Kinderkick:

Kinderkick have fun AFL clubs for kids through a program for boys and girls aged 3-5 years, helping them build on their gross motor skills of throwing, catching, balancing and crawling. Your child doesn’t have to be a budding Lion to join the program – it’s great for developing social skills and simply having fun too!

NAB AFL Auskick:

NAB AFL AusKick is an introductory program delivered at schools and local junior AFL Clubs for kids. The program teaches the basics of passing, kicking, and AFL rules before boys and girls go on to play in a team with a junior AFL club. Different venues offer boys-only, girls-only and mixed programs. There are so many Brisbane schools, both private and public, offering NAB AFL Auskick that it’s impossible for us to list them all, but you can find out more about what’s on offer in your area on the Auskick website: www.aflauskick.com.au

AFL Programs from 5-10 years old:

From the age of 5 your child can begin playing AFL at their local junior AFL clubs for kids. Boys and girls play a modified game on a smaller field with a focus on learning their AFL skills in a fun, safe environment. In U9 and U10 games children begin to tackle with a bear hug – no rough play and going to ground! Kids in the U11 program will learn correct tackling and begin to play to full AFL rules.

Competitive Junior AFL for kids U12 to U16:

When your child enters the U12 category they will begin to play AFL competitively for points in their division, and from there it’s on to the premiership! Most clubs sign on in February/March with games played April/May through to August/September.
